Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF)

Procedures For The Recognition Of Kyu And Dan Grades At The International Level

  1. Competence for Homologation of Kyu and Dan Grades by the JJIF and issuance of Rank Diplomas

  1. For grades of Kyu and up through 5th Dan, homologations and diplomas will be issued by the JJIF upon a written request by the President (or his Official Delegate) of the National Member for the respective country involved and sent to the Official Office of the local JJIF Continental Union or, where a local Continental Union is not established, to the General Secretary of JJIF.

The request must clearly indicate, for each Ju-Jitsu Applicant the following:

  • Full name,
  • Nationality, place of birth and date,
  • Ju-Jitsu rank requested, date of examination & date of rank,
  • Proof of payment of the related fees (see paragraph C.)
  1. For 6th and 7th Dan, homologations and diplomas will be issued only after the national request (with a complete "curriculum of education" and other information as listed in paragraph A.) has been examined and approved by the Board of the JJIF Continental Union geographically competent; in case no Continental Union is established in the area concerned, the examination and approval is left to the Board of Directors of JJIF.

  2. For 8th and 9th Dan, homologations and diplomas will be issued only after the national request (with a complete "curriculum of education" and other information as listed in A.) has been examined and approved by the Board of Directors of JJIF.

  3. For 10th Dan, homologations and diplomas will be issued only after the national request (with a complete "curriculum of education" and other information as listed in A.) has received a favorable recommendation by the Board of Directors of JJIF and has been ratified by the JJIF General Assembly.

  1. JJIF Officials responsible for Homologations and Rank Diplomas

The Degree Diplomas will be prepared by JJIF, will be signed by the President of the JJIF and by the President of the JJIF Continental Union and will be issued through the JJIF Continental Unions to the Official Address of the Member Country involved.

The Member Country will proceed with the distribution of Diplomas signed by its President (or Delegate) to the individuals for which a request was presented to the JJIF.

The JJIF General Secretary will keep records of the homologations for all degrees issued and will inform the JJIF Technical Committee.

By so doing, the Ju-Jitsu Rank is recognized and honored world- wide by JJIF Member Countries.

  1. Fees for Homologations and Rank Diplomas within the Ju-Jitsu North American Union (JJNAU):

  • For all Kyu grades $ 50.00 USD each Diploma
  • For all Dan grades $100.00 USD each Diploma
  1. Homologations and issuance of Ju-Jitsu Rank Diplomas shall follow the "curriculum of education" as established by the Official National System for each Member Country of the JJIF.

  2. For further details or inquiries, please contact the National Office for your country.

(Approved by the Board of Directors of JJIF on July 17, 1999.)

Below is a letter from Frank Furst, JJIF General Secretary on this subject.

To: Presidents of Member Countries

Subject: Recognition of Kyu and Dan Ranks at the International Level

Dear Colleague,

You know how important it is for a Ju-Jitsuka to receive a belt rank after serious training and a properly conducted examination. It deserves achievement which compensates for sacrifices and dedication.

It is therefore only natural that we associate to Kyu and Dan grades a sense of pride and respect. The rank, when properly attributed, tells us how far we have proceeded in the very demanding but also rewarding road of Ju-Jitsu enrichment.

Our International Federation does not consider appropriate - in line with the content of our Statutes - to interfere with national practices and technical rules of its National Members even on the matter of examinations for Kyu and Dan grades. On the other side JJIF is certainly prepared to give more emphasis and to recognize at the International Level the Kyu and Dan grades assigned nationally by the Competent Officials of its National Members. Furthermore the homologation by JJIF, as the official World Governing Body for Ju-Jitsu, allows for a rank to be recognized and honored world-wide by all JJIF Members Countries.

We would like to stress how this procedure must be interpreted as a safeguard of the value of ranks within the context of the ethics of our Federation which is concentrated not only on the practical activities on the tatami but also on the moral values behind them.

As a consequence of the above considerations and in respect of the intention expressed by the 1999 General Assembly and with the power assigned by the same Assembly, the Board of Directors of JJIF has established the rules which are summarized in the following page.

We now expect to receive from you requests for recognition of Kyu and Dan grades from your Country, following the procedures indicated in the attachment to this letter.

We ask you to please give a great diffusion about this important decision of International Kyu and Dan rank recognition world-wide and we remain available for any clarification you may need. This information will also be available via Internet.

Very best regards,
Frank Furst
JJIF General Secretary
