Dan Suthers was born and raised in Wisconsin. Like many Wisconsinites he is a Brewers and Packers fan (part owner of the Packers). Like many youth, Dan started playing Baseball in the late 1980's for the YMCA. Once he was in High School, Dan played Football. Starting all 4 years on both sides of the ball for the Division 1, James Madison Memorial High School - Spartans (Madison, Wisconsin). He also did Track and Field in the spring and made it to the State Championship in the 100 meter dash (10.2 seconds) and the Long Jump (21.5 feet). Dan finished High School with 7 Varsity Letters. Dan graduated with High Academic Honors in 1997. Although Dan was offered many college scholarships for sports, He chose to follow his childhood dream of a career in Law Enforcement.
Dan earned a Bachelors Degree in Police Science and started working for the Town of Madison Police Department. Dan soon learned that the Department of Corrections paid better and had better benefits. In October of 2000 he began training at the Wisconsin Correctional Training Center In Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Dan has been with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (WI-DOC) ever since. Finishing a 2 year apprentice program with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development in 2002. He served as a member of ERU (Emergency Response Unit) the DOC version of SWAT, at two different Prisons. Dan is trained in First Aid, CPR, , Electronic Control Devices, Impact Weapons, Specialty Munitions, Empty Hand Control, Principles of Subject Control, and Firearms. Dan has had a perfect score in firearms requalification many times. He contributes this to owing his own land which has a firearms range designed by him. Dan is also a hobbyist gunsmith with a good reputation, He has built and restored many firearms for his fellow Officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains. Dan collects Colt 1911's dating back to WWI.
After High School, Dan felt a void that needed to be filled. He had been an athlete for as long as he could remember. He wanted to continue to be challenged and continue to compete. Of course like any child of the 80's who grew up with the Karate Kid and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the choice of the Martial Way wasn't to hard. Being called Daniel-San since 1984 didn't help either.
Dan started martial arts in 1997 as a means to stay active and help him in his Law Enforcement career. Like many young men he was attracted to sparring, winning many "Badger State Games" medals. Then like many Karateka, Dan matured and realized that the true proof of skill is in Kata competition. Dan has since earned many 1st place trophies in forms divisions. Always trying to improve, Dan reminds his students of Gichin Funakoshi's ideal that "The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of the character of its participants."
Dan is a 7th Dan in Tang Soo Do (Universal Tang Soo Do Alliance), 7th Dan Karate (Independent Karate Schools of America, Danny Chapman, Floyd Burk, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace). 6th Dan Shotokan Karate (United States Martial Arts Federation, United States Shotokan Karate). 2nd Dan Shorin-ryu Karate (Zentokukai).
Dan is a Lifetime Member of the United States Martial Arts Federation (USMAF) and the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF).
Dan is married to his wife Christina (Chrissy). They have 4 children. The family all train in Shotokan Karate together and compete in many tournaments in the Spring and Fall.
