Dave Hammond took up martial initially in 1980, studying Judo, not attaining his first (sho)dan until 1999. The decision to take up Judo rather than any other art was partially because it was more readily available, partly because it formed the basis of British Army unarmed combat and partially because it was understood to be a defensive, rather than offensive system.
On attaining his shodan, Dave also started to study a number of aikido styles, settling mostly with Tomiki Aikido. Since then he has attained his 3rd Dan via the British Judo Council and 5th Dan through Judo For All (UK), the latter rank gained in 2016.
In the meantime Dave competed in both contest (Shia) and kata with the British Judo Council and the British Judo Association. He gained coaching qualification, initially under the supervision of Akinori Hosaka, Sensei, Kodokan 8th dan and went on to coach and mentor national champions in the UK. He has been privileged to be coached by such luminaries as Hosaka, Mr G R Mealing, Neil Adams and Ray Stevens and Sampson Sampson. He regards Mr Mealing and Mr Sampson as genuine Sensei to himself.
From 2000 to 2010 he was editor of the British Judo Council magazine, Judoka, and in 1999 his first judo book was published. Ippon: the fight for judo’s soul (with a foreword by Akinori Hosaka)is a study of the changing philosophy of judo as a means of training and a martial art, noting that with the advent of Judo as an Olympic sport the emphasis was dramatically changed to make it a combat sport. During that period Dave also ran regular clubs, taught at national seminars and established a Judo Summer School in Scotland, later a mid-winter Kangeiko, harsh mid-winter training school to his rosta.
Regarding as a senior member of Judo For All (UK), Dave was instrumental in getting that organisation affiliated to the World Judo Federation and was involved in the establishment of contest rules for the nascent European WJF section in Jesi, Italy, 2012.
In 2010 Dave became a security attendant at a city hospital in Scotland and simultaneously attended University. At the hospital, taught be the psychiatric department, he learned arrest and control techniques and at the University he became the Judo coach, gaining the Student Coach of the Year award. On his return to England he was appointed Self-Defence coach at the Hull University Scarborough campus. He also started working with North Yorkshire Police, providing life skills training via Judo to young people on the edge of the criminal justice system. Becoming a professional Judo coach he also taught in schools, special needs schools and approved units.
In 2016 Dave moved into the security industry on a regular basis, becoming a Close Protection Officer and Head Door Supervisor. As a consequence his study started to incorporate not just the goshin jutsu, of which he was already a well-established coach of, but the Renkoho, Kodokan arrest and restraint techniques. Subsequently he published his second Judo book, Applying the Right Amount of Force, with a foreword by Bruce Bethers.
In this new role, Dave has worked for famous musicians and authors, expert court witnesses and others requiring specialised protection. As a Door Supervisor he has been involved in countless physical conflicts in Scotland, North Yorkshire, London and Lancashire. He has undergone training in four physical intervention systems approved by the British Security Industry Authority (SIA). He has also taught conflict management to corporate clients, mostly those involved in the Night Time Economy (NTE).
Currently, away from front line security Dave is employed as a tutor within the British security industry, teaching conflict management, disengagement and escorting techniques, using SIA approved methods of physical intervention. In 2025 Dave also qualifed and started to work in Quality Assurance, ensuring that physical skills are being correctly taught by SIA approved tutors.
