David O. Shipley has studied and trained in martial arts since 1977. He is an International Sports Science Association Certified Elite Trainer, US Taiho Jutsu Academy Certified Defensive Tactics Instructor, an ASEP Certified Leader Level Coach, and a USAKF certified referee. His martial arts experience includes Aikido, Jujutsu, Kali, Shotokan Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tae Mantis Kung Fu, Taiho Jutsu, and Taijiquan.
David received his 1st and 2nd degree Black Belts in Shotokan from Shojiro Sugiyama and Hidetaka Nishiyama while training in Chicago at the Midwest Headquarters for the Japan Karate Association. He received his 3rd and 4th degree Black Belts in Shotokan and 1st through 3rd degree Black Belts in Taiho Jutsu from Charles L. Plaines, Sr. while training at the Far Eastern Arts dojo in Waukegan, IL.
David was the General Secretary of the US Taiho Jutsu Federation from 2002-2012, edited the USTJF Arresting Solutions Newsletter from 2008-2012, was Director of the Waukegan Community Church Life Protection Academy from 2004-2018, served as the Illinois State Representative for the Gospel Martial Arts Union International, and is a lifetime member of the Kicks for Christ Federation.
Professionally David has experience in Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Planning, and Change Management. He is a Certified Supply Chain Professional and is Certified in Planning and Inventory Management with APICS/ASCM. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, Economics, Rhetoric & Law, and an MBA in Public/Nonprofit Management and Human Resource Management, both from the University of Chicago.
PRIMARY INSTRUCTORS:
Shojiro Sugiyama was born in Tokyo in 1929. In 1954, after having trained in two other styles of karate, he began training under Hidetaka Nishiyama and other instructors at the Japan Karate Association headquarters dojo in Tokyo. In 1963 he was invited to come to Chicago to teach karate. From 1963 through 2000 he was the Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association of Chicago, and Director of the JKA Great Lakes Region. Sensei Sugiyama passed away in 2015.
Charles Plaines (at the age of 14) in 1958 was sponsored to study in Japan at the Kodokan in Tokyo. There he studied Judo and Shotokan Karate daily under many noted instructors such as Kazuzo Kudo, Hidetaka Nishiyama, and Sumiyuki Kotani.
In 1961 Charles Plaines joined the US Air Force, completed Basic training and was assigned to return to the Kodokan to participate in a special instructor training program. The mornings were broken down into four parts: Judo, Shotokan Karate, Tomiki Aikido and Tai-Jutsu. During the last nine months of training Tai-Jutsu was replaced by Taiho-Jutsu. The afternoons were primarily academic: Teaching Methods, and Sports Medicine.
In 1965 Charles Plaines participated in a 100-hour special training program on Aikido and Taiho-Jutsu at Anderson Air Force Base in Guam. The Master instructor was Kisshomaru Ueshiba (Aikido). Other noted Judo instructors were there also.
By the time of his death in July 2006, Charles L. Plaines, Sr., had been teaching martial arts for 45 years. He was a 9th Degree Master of Taiho-Jutsu, an 8th Degree Master of Shotokan Karate and a 6th Degree Master of Tai-Jutsu. He faithfully served his country for 13 years during the Vietnam War, held senior black belts in Judo and Aikido, and taught combative measures and Taiho-Jutsu to armed forces instructors and police departments worldwide. He was the President of the US Taiho Jutsu Federation and had been inducted into three internationally recognized Halls of Fame. He was on the Board of Directors for the US Ju-Jitsu Federation, the US Karate Do Kai, and the International Taiho-Jutsu Federation.
Luke Gamalinda has a background in Lama Kung Fu, Kali, Shotokan Karate, and Taiho Jutsu. He began his formal martial arts training in 1981 and received his 4th degree black belt in Taiho Jutsu from Charles Plaines. He began his career in law enforcement with the Illinois State Police in 1985. He was a Control and Arrest Tactics Instructor for state and local departments and was the Vice President of the US Taiho Jutsu Federation from 2006-2012.
