Doug Bedsaul
Life Member - United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) ®
Life Member - USA Traditional Kodokan Judo (USA-TKJ) ®
Head Instructor - Downtown Martial Arts Academy
Doug Bedsaul started martial arts training while in college at Mississippi State University. He devoted any time, outside of work or his academic studies, to practicing taekwondo, judo, and jujutsu at the dojo and in local parks. When a class or partner was not available, he expanded his knowledge by reading ancient texts and modern magazines on the subject. In taekwondo, he competed in numerous Southern Martial Arts, Inc. (SMAC) tournaments, as well as independent tournaments in Alabama and Mississippi. In judo, he continues to compete in tournaments across all levels (local, regional, national, international) and affiliations (USJA, USJF, USJI, ATJA, IFJA, AAU) in both the senior and veteran divisions. He has won several national tournaments and coached his own students to a national championship. In 2024, he started his own annual tournament: the Bulldog Invitational. He has traveled through most of the United States teaching judo and jujutsu at clubs and camps.
Bedsaul has operated Downtown Martial Arts Academy since 2012 in Starkville, MS. Through his dojo, he has been able to teach self-defense skills to thousands of community members by collaborating with the local schools and employers.
Bedsaul has had the privilege of training under many high-ranking individuals in judo and jujutsu. His most influential mentor was Mark Barlow. Barlow Sensei trained Doug to lead the Akayama Ryu Jujutsu organization in the event of his passing. When that time unexpectedly came, Bedsaul became the Head Instructor for Akayama Ryu with schools across several states and Panama, and two annual training camps.
In addition to his leadership in martial arts organizations, Bedsaul has also served his community on the board of the Starkville Foundation for Public Education, Starkville PTO, and Temple B’nai Israel (Columbus, MS).
