Renshi Eileen M. Miller has over 45 years experience in the Martial Arts.
In 1979, Eileen Miller began training in martial arts with Dan O’Grady, Sensei, Shudokan Karate, at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD.
Dan O’Grady’s background included training in martial arts at the Rapid City YMCA just before serving in the Army and Marines and in the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968. In 1976, as a member of the Marine 2nd Force Recon, Sensei O’Grady had been promoted to Shodan as an instructor in Hwarang Do Hand to Hand Combat by Michael Echanis. Sensei O’Grady’s dedication to the art and his training with the military in hand-to-hand and knife defense was a great benefit to those who studied under him.
During her time with Sensei O’Grady, Eileen Miller trained and competed in tournaments in the Black Hills South Dakota area. She was promoted to San Kyu in Shudokan Karate by Sensei O’Grady before she and her husband moved to work in Nebraska in 1980.
Eileen Miller later returned to the Black Hills area with her husband and two children to raise cattle in 1998. Eileen also began working as an office manager at the Belle Fourche Methodist Church in 2010. In 2013, Pastor Bob Duemig, moved to Belle Fourche to be the minister at the church. Bob Duemig was a black belt (4th Dan) in Jujitsu and trained under Julio “Mutch” Usera since 1984.
Pastor Bob (Sensei) Duemig started a dojo in the church in 2014 as a “ministry” to the community. At age 54, Eileen enrolled in the class for exercise and her love of martial arts. After beginning the class, Eileen was hooked. The defensive knife techniques that were part of the curriculum Sensei Duemig taught looked familiar to Miller. She was surprised to find out that she was being taught the same knife techniques she had practiced thirty-five years before. Those techniques had been shared by Sensei O’Grady with Usera Hanshi as part of Bujin Ki Ryu Jujitsu curriculum.
In 2019, Pastor Bob, left the church due to health issues and Eileen Miller became owner and head instructor of the Northern Hills Bujin Ki Ryu JuJitsu Dojo. In 2024, Eileen Miller was promoted to Yondan by Usera Hanshi, 10th Dan. She received her 3rd Dan promotion in Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu in 2021 by Usera Hanshi.
The school continues to operate with the intention of being a benefit to the community and making sure all students who have the desire to train are provided with the opportunity to do so. Three separate classes are taught at the school: kids’ classes beginning at age 8, youth classes are for grades 5 through 8, and an adult/teen class. The school has an average of 40 students. The school follows Christian principles and teaches self-discipline, self-control, and physical strength through a positive and safe environment. Every student who joins is offered a new Bible as a gift and each class ends in prayer.
Sensei Miller hosts and teaches self-defense classes, which have been well-attended by women from the community and surrounding area and offers special private classes to individual businesses and organizations. These special classes have been provided to realtors, dental office staff, physical therapists, cheerleading teams, other healthcare workers and social service professionals.
Being a part of the community is important and in the last five years the school has helped with a fundraiser to raise money for school playground equipment, demonstrations at nursing home and kids’ festival, taken part in local Wellness Fair, held an open house celebrating the school’s tenth year anniversary, and donated to local law enforcement and charities.
Eileen Miller hosted and assisted Belle Fourche Police Department Recruit Training – with Officer Wallace Eddy, trainer. She arranged for students to act as cooperative and uncooperative perpetrators in simulated arrest situations. Recruits also were given opportunities to train on bags and spar with Miller and her Jujitsu students who she especially selected for these training exercises.
Eileen Miller has instructed classes at Usera Hanshi’s Annual Master Series Martial Arts Camp held in Rapid City, South Dakota and instructs at the Black Belt Club training sessions under the leadership of Usera Hanshi in Rapid City, South Dakota.
