Garry L. McKee was born on May 15, 1947. He started his martial arts training in 1963 at age 16 in Enid, OK. He started training with his fellow High School student Charles "Chuck" Clark. Chuck Clark later went on to practice martial arts full time as a career and later founded Jishinkan Akido. In 1970 Garry trained with Robert Willingham in Okla. City. He studied Judo and JuJitsu with Sensei Willingham at the OK Academy of Judo.
Garry was attracted to the mental and physical aspects of the martial arts and began training with John Chaffin in OKC in 1974. John Chaffin was founder of AMAS "American Martial Arts Association". One of John Chaffin's students at the time was Bruce Bethers, who is now President of USJJF.
Garry continued his studies over many years with Sensei Chaffin until Sensei Chaffin retired. Garry studied JuJitsu under Sensei Chaffin and Koichi Kobayashi, of the Hirosaki Japan Buddist JuJitsu Academy. Garry received his Shodan in JuJitsu in 1974, at the time he also received his Shodan from the Kodokan Judo Institute, Tokyo Japan and the USJA.
During this time, he also began training in Tae Kwon Do under Jack Hwang in OKC. Receiving Shodan rank in 1977 from Le Je-Hwang of the Korea Yudo Academy, Seoul, Korea. During those years, Garry competed in many state and regional Judo and Karate tournaments placing in the top three positions in many of them.
In 1973 Garry moved to Muskogee, OK after completing his BS in Biology. There he started the Muskogee Judo Club in 1975 and trained a student, along with the help of Pius Yoon of the Tulsa Judo Club. Their student placed 5th in the Jr. Olympics.
After moving back to OKC in 1977, Garry started training with Charles "Chuck" Caldwell at the Windsong Dojo in OKC. While training with Sensei Caldwell, he started training in Aikido in 1985. His original interest was to better understand off- balancing thru Aikido so he could apply those understandings to Judo. After a short time, he fell in love with Aikido. He also started training with Karl Geiss of the Fugakukai in Houston, TX. In 1988, he received his Shodan in Aikido. While continuing training in Judo and Aikido, he started training in Jyodo "long staff weaponry" in 1986 as well. He received his Shodan in Jyodo in 1989 while attending clinics at the Fufakukai and training visits from Shihan Tsunako Mayake Tokyo, Japan.
Over the years, he had the pleasure to work with many mentors including Senseis Cliff Norgaard, David Wire, Billy Sharp, and Phil Porter. Garry worked in public health for over 41 years after he received two master degrees and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Oklahoma in 1980.
His professional career started in Oklahoma, took him to Wyoming, Washington D.C., Nebraska, and back to Oklahoma. He continued his martial arts training throughout those years. He is now retired and spends a lot of quality time in Colorado enjoying the mountains.
