Hanshi Julio "Mutch" Usera has over 50 years experience in the Martial Arts.
Julio “Mutch” Usera has always been involved in a form of martial arts or boxing for over 53 years. His training in Jukite JuJitsu was influenced by his Sensei, Master Al Salazar, 9th Dan, Chief Instructor, during the early 70's. In 1978 Usera become the Chief Instructor of the Rapid City JuJitsu School. In 2008, Usera earned his 8th Dan in Jukite Ju-Jitsu from Hanshi Claude Woodson, 10th Dan, Jukite JuJitsu from St. Louis, MO.
In 1984 Usera also began training under Ken Penland, 10th Dan in Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu in 1984 until his death in 2006. Hanshi Penland Jujitsu system was instrumental in training combative skills for the Los Angeles Police Department. After the passing of Hanshi Penland, Usera continued his training in Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu, Bujin Ki Ryu Jujitsu and several other martial arts under Hanshi George Alexander, 10th Dan and Chairman of International Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu Federation, International Shorin Ryu Karate Kobudo Federation and Okinawa Hakutsuru Kenpo Karate Association.
In 2021, Usera received his 10th Dan and title of Hanshi in Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu under Hanshi George Alexander. He also trains in the art of Matsumura Shorin Ryu Karate, Kamagata Ryu Kenjutsu (Samurai Sword) and Okinawa Hakutsuru Kenpo Karate under George Alexander, Hanshi.
Usera is also engaged and recognized by national martial arts organizations:
Martial Arts Training & Achievements:
Usera and his wife Charlene, own and operate a Dojo at the Rushmore Mall, Rapid City. They have been in operation since then with over 100+ active students and 11 Black Belt instructors training under his leadership. Usera continues to instruct several Black Belt students that own and operate their own dojos. These Dojos are located in Belle Fourche, SD; Sioux Falls, SD, Minnetonka, MN and Park City, UT.
Usera has always been a promoter for the art of JuJitsu as well as other martial arts systems. He has promoted tournaments since 1975 which were opened to all styles and systems. Tournaments were used for students to their skills and create relationships with other clubs and martial artists. Today, tournaments are directed by his affiliated dojo in Sioux Falls. Usera has and continue to instruct JuJitsu and tactical defense to area Law Enforcement, business professionals and Women self-defense seminars. He is the founder of the Master's Series Martial Arts Camp. During his martial arts career, he has conducted seminars in JuJitsu at various clubs and summer training camps. Since 2008, Usera has been the Master Jujitsu instructor for the George Alexander’s ISKKF Summer Camp held in Palm Coast, FL.
Usera is a prominent business and community leader in Rapid City region and South Dakota. He retired from Black Hills Energy in 2021 after 48-1/2 years of service. His professional expertise in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications and Economic Development continues to volunteer and support organizations throughout South Dakota. He also graduated from Black Hills State University.
