His foundational training took place under Master John K. Thomas in a mixed curriculum of Hapkido, Taekwondo, and Judo, including active competition in Taekwondo tournaments.
He currently holds the following ranks and certifications:
5th Dan Hapkido – World Martial Arts Federation (WMAF), awarded by Danny Lane
3rd Dan Hapkido – Master John K. Thomas, Founder United States Karate Center
3rd Dan Hapkido – United States Martial Arts Federation (USMAF)

2nd Dan Traditional Taekwondo – Professional Taekwondo Federation (PTF)
In addition to his technical ranks and instructor certifications, Nathan served over 20 years as a Fairfax County Police Officer and is a Police Tactics Instructors of America (PTIOA) Level 7 Instructor.
He also served in the U.S. Army in a military intelligence role. His law enforcement career was impacted by multiple serious on-duty spinal injuries, leading to early retirement in 2019. After a long recovery and physical comeback, he took ownership of his original dojo. He now trains alongside his own children and continues to teach practical, character-driven martial arts.
He completed Nutrition Network Advisor training and became a Certified Metabolic Health Practitioner (SMHP). He pursued this certification to better manage and treat his own long-term injuries and now uses this knowledge to advise others on metabolic health and recovery.
In 2026, Nathan was inducted into the Cleveland Martial Arts Hall of Fame, nominated by Danny Lane of the World Martial Arts Federation. This recognition honors his perseverance and contributions to the martial arts community despite significant adversity.
Nathan is currently training in authentic Genbukan Ninpo Taijutsu under Dojo Cho Mark Toth (Unryu Dojo), with his official application already forwarded to Genbukan Honbu in Japan.
