Ryan C. Hurst
Member - USA Traditional Kodokan Judo (USA-TKJ) ®
Member - United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) ®
Head Instructor - Juyukai
Ryan Hurst began his martial arts training at age fifteen with Aikido. At age twenty, he traveled to Japan as an exchange student and continued his study of budō through Judo, Kendo, and Iaido. What began as a short stay became a long-term commitment, and he ultimately lived and trained in Japan for twenty-eight years, receiving all of his rank there.
He holds black belt rank in Kodokan Judo, Kendo, Iaido, and Shorinji Kempo, and holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also competed actively for many years during his time in Japan. Following that period, his training shifted toward an emphasis on fundamentals, technical precision, kata study, and long-term development rather than competition-focused progression.
Ryan is the founder and instructor of Jūyūkai, a small Judo research and study group based in Andover, Kansas, dedicated to exploring traditional Kodokan Judo as a lifelong practice. Training centers on kata-informed study, systematic exploration of the Gokyo, applied randori, and cultivating mutual welfare and responsibility among training partners.
In addition to his martial arts practice, Ryan is an educator and Head Coach at GMB Fitness, with decades of experience teaching physical training and skill development to diverse populations. His approach integrates posture, breath, and mindful practice as foundational elements of both martial and everyday life.
