2022 USA Unified Martial Arts HOF, USA Team - National Elite Jiu-Jitsu Athlete
Mr. Andrew Newman was born in Northeastern Ohio in 1986 and has been interested in martial arts since his early years. As a child around the age of 8, he started with Aiki-jujutsu and Aikido. It was not until 2012 when he started back to formal Martial arts training under Joe Stronsick at Adventure Mixed Martial Arts. Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Mega, Kempo and Kickboxing. He continued to train and belt there. After competing in his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament and placing 3rd where he was instantly hooked. Mr. Newman continued training and competing in multiple modalities of martial arts including MMA.
It was while competing in Mixed Martial Arts that he meet Brian Walsh who would latter become his Coach and Mentor. He started training under Dr. Walsh in Jiu-Jitsu, Jujutsu fighting and Judo. He felt Shihan Walsh trained in a way that was easy to understand and made the concept of winning logical. It was with Novam Unionem Jiu-Jitsu and for strength and conditioning under Josh hillman at Savage MMA, that he started to seriously put work in to improve his skills. He incorporated the philosophy of training Smart and Hard while competing consistently.
During this time Mr. Newman competed and won many tournaments including the State Championship in Grappling, AKJU and Nationals. He also competed and won USJJF Nationals in Jiu-Jitsu Grappling, Silver in Jujitsu Fighting style and Bronze in USA-TKJ Judo. This ensured his spot on the USJJF National Team and Alliance Team to compete at the 2015 WCJJO worlds in Switzerland.
He won the Championship Belt by winning Gold in Ne-waza Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Grappling and Bronze in Sport Ju-Jitsu Fighting. He helped Team USA win Silver at the event. Mr. Newman feels that this was one of the greatest experiences of his life. He credits all his Coaches, instructor and training partners with the win. It was the support, sacrifice, and friendship of the team and family. 2015 was also memorable for him as he earned his Ju-Jitsu / Jukado Black Belt through hard work, blood, sweat and tears.
Andrew Newman feel it was the support, sacrifice, and friendship of the team, from all the beginners who asked him questions and every seasoned practitioner who showed him there will always be more to learn. He states that it was him on the mats but he was not alone on his Martial Arts Journey.
