Life Member - USA Traditional Kodokan Judo (USA-TKJ) ®
Betty Keim started learning Kodokan judo in 2001 when she started bringing her three children to take classes. Betty decided that judo was something she wanted to start learning and joined her children in the lessons. Betty has been instructed by a core of exceptional instructors throughout her career.
The following instructors at the Denton Junior Optimist Judo Club trained Betty since 2001; Sensei Mike Woodson, Sensei Doug Newcomer, Sensei Randy Firth, Sensei Bob Ray, Sensei Barry Howell Sensei Ron Stokes, Sensei Dean Salehyan and Sensei Frank Brown.
In 2003, at 40 years old, Betty competed in Senior Nationals. Now ranked as a Sankyu, Betty tied for second in her category division while defeating a black belt in the process. The result was Betty being promoted in Kodokan Judo to Nikyu at the Denton Junior Optimist Judo Club. After a hiatus from judo, Betty returned in 2011 to began teaching children beginner classes at the Denton Junior Optimist Judo Club eventually being promoted to Shodan in 2019.
When Nicolas Valcik arrived to volunteer instruct and start a program of Heike Ryu Jiu Jitsu at the Denton Junior Optimist Judo Club in June 2022, Betty began training in Heike Ryu Jiu Jitsu under Sensei Valcik. Betty always had an interest in self-defense, so this jujitsu program was a good fit for her existing skills in Kodokan Judo.
As she began her training, Betty also began assisting Sensei Valcik in the instruction of the Heike Ryu Jiu Jitsu classes to junior beginning students. Betty’s goal is to eventually lead training in Heike Ryu Jiu Jitsu for juniors and women in self-defense.
