Sensei Cliff King’s martial arts journey began over thirty years ago in Austin, Texas, shortly after his fifth birthday. His first style was Tukong Moosul which included training in Taekwondo, Hapkido and traditional weapons under Wonik Yi, 7th Dan. When his family moved to Dallas, Cliff began training at Tamura Judo Institute under the legendary Vince Tamura and his many outstanding black belts. Training with Tamura Sensei and other instructors continued until Cliff’s enlistment in the US Marine Corps after high school graduation. When he left for boot camp, Cliff held kyu ranks in Budo Taijutsu (green), Judo (brown-Nikyu), and Moo Sa Sool (red-traditional weapons). He also had a 1st degree black belt (Chodan) in Hapkido.
Cliff’s eight years of military service as a Reconnaissance Marine required months of specialized training and multiple overseas deployments, including two combat tours in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He earned his Combat Action Ribbon, Commanding General Certificate of Commendation for combat performance, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, and Meritorious Unit Commendation as a deep recon team member with 2nd Force Reconnaissance Co. during the initial invasion of Iraq. On his second tour, he served as a recon team leader with 3rd Reconnaissance Bn in the Al-Anbar Province earning a Navy Unit Commendation.
After receiving his B.A. degree in Criminal Justice, summa cum laude, from The University of Texas at San Antonio, Cliff entered the law enforcement field where, in addition to his regular patrol duties, he also served as a firearms and defensive tactics instructor and field training officer. In 2015 he was voted “Officer of the Year” by his peers for outstanding training performance. He has taught numerous courses in use of force, mechanics of arrest, defensive tactics, ju-jitsu/taiho jutsu, emergency medicine, and domestic terrorism. Cliff is certified by the State of Texas as a Master Peace Officer and Licensed Paramedic.
Throughout his military and law enforcement years, Cliff continued teaching and training in martial arts. For many years he served as judo/ju-jitsu instructor for the K-Bar Judo Club in Fredericksburg, Texas under Sensei Tom Ketchbaw, Godan-USA Judo and an Iwo Jima veteran. In 2003 Ketchbaw Sensei referred Cliff to Zdenek Matl, Hachidan-USJA Ju-Jitsu and Hachidan-USJA Judo & USA Judo, for advanced instruction. Eighteen months later, Matl Sensei awarded Cliff dan ranks in judo and ju-jitsu. The passing years brought additional promotions and in spring 2018, Matl Sensei awarded Cliff the rank of Godan in Ju-Jitsu. In the fall of 2018, the USJJF promoted him to Godan in both US Ju-Jitsu and US Taiho Jutsu. Cliff currently holds Senior Instructor-Examiner certifications from USJJF in both of his Godan ranks. He also holds Sandan judo rank and an Associate Instructor-Examiner certification from USA Traditional Kodokan Judo and Nidan judo rank from the United States Judo Association.
Cliff is currently employed with the United States Department of the Navy (USMC) as a Law Enforcement Training Specialist assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan. He is also the owner of K-Bar Ju-Jitsu, a USJJF & USA-TKJ affiliated school offering instruction in traditional ju-jitsu and taiho jutsu.
