He started Judo at 7 years old, in 1973. He competed at countless tournaments, winning 5 state championships and 4 second place state championships by the timeI He finished high school.. He won 5 collegiate state championships as well.
When He went to college in 1984, started taking Private Self Defense lessons from Vince Tamura. He continued to practice and with Tamura Sensei. Until He graduated college. There was not a promotion/belt program back then.
As a graduate student He taught self defense classes at the university using Tamura Sensei’s self defense.
At age 30 He started fighting in the masters category and won several National Championships. He also started competing in the various Kata’s of Judo. He has won national medals at all 5 of the competitive judo katas. He has focused on Katame No Kata, and is currently the National Champion in Katame No Kata as well as 2022 overall National Kata Champion.
He placed second at the Pan American championships in 2016. He has competed in 5 World Kata Championships including this year. He has coached many local, state and national champions through the years at the Denton Jr. Optimist Judo Club.
He is a 6th Degree Black Belt in Judo with USA Judo and 1st Degree Black Belt in Heike Ryu Jiu Jitsu.
He hopes to advance the Heike-Ryu Jiu Jitsu program at our dojo to add practical self defense to our Judo program.
Douglas has a bachelors degree from University of North Texas in Industrial Technology And a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology. He taught at the college level but spent most of his teaching career teaching elementary school PE.
