Dr. Gary Brettmann started his first judo class with Jack Lowe, Sensei; he needed Uke for his son Mike my friend in cub scouts. 1965 Two years with them, then long sabbatical until high school, when he began studying Shaolin with Frank Lebron of John Tsai’s lineage 1972-75 (1st black belt). He had friends in Taekwondo and Hapkido during that time and shared techniques from their styles( from Kwang Seek Hyun & Jhoon Rhee’ s students)
He entered Navy a year after high school graduation and served with Arnis practitioners and had a friend who was a Yoshitsune jujitsu practitioner (DePasquale) who showed me many techniques in weekly workouts allowing me earning Shodan in DePasquale system 1982 Shodan received. He studied Burmese Bando staff techniques and some Chi Tao Chuan gung fu, (1974) never ranked.
When in Chiropractic college, Tom Curtis, a Class mate had Dan rank in Doce Pares Arnis. They trained together sharing skills during workouts. Dr. Brettmann earned Black Belt in Arnis. Dr. Brettmann studied Goshin JuJitsu at local community college earning Dan rank. He progressed to Sandan which he stayed at for 15+ years until he was promoted to Yondan in US Ju-Jitsu by the USJJF November 2020.
Dr. Brettmann has taught cane techniques for advanced black belt students and jujitsu to taekwondo students over the past 25 years in Arlington Texas. He has sat in testing board for Taekwondo Belts for over 25 years as well. Dr. Brettmann endorses USJJF when he teaches & judges testing. He, appreciated Sensei Bercerra for presenting him with his 4th Dan advancement in Ju-Jitsu on Becerra's promotion to 9th Dan in Judo.
Dr. Brettmnn has worked in direct patient care since 1977 beginning as a Naval Hospital Corpsman achieving 3rd class Petty Officer rank, was certified clinical lab technician and certified advanced EMT/Paramedic in Florida and Illinois.
He was first enlisted to be allowed ACLS certification in 1978 @ NAS Jax, Florida, He started their advanced ambulance service on base. He studied pre- Med achieved A.S. In Biology and achieved enough courses for admission to Texas Chiropractic college in Pasadena, graduating in 1988, as Dr. of Chiropractic. He has been a Member of Texas Chiropractic Association and Chiropractic Society of Texas, of which heI was president of Chiropractic Society of Texas 2012-14. He maintained private practice from 1989-2016. He has served as sole chiropractor for Ft Worth outpatient clinic of North Texas Veterans health care administration since February 2015.
Dr. Brettmann has been married to his wife Geri since 1981, having 2 daughters, who have blessed them with 4 grandkids. He has been able to see my eldest grandson achieve brown belt in TaeKwonDo. His 7 year old twin grandsons are learning some techniques from him as often as Dr. Brettmann can visit them.
