Professor Gary Hensley is a submission grappler with a background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Japanese Ju-Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. He started his grappling journey in 1995 when he started wrestling. Professor Hensley is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Professor Lt Gen Michael Ferriter and holds black belts in Ju-Jitsu and Judo under Professor Brian Walsh. Professor Hensley is a decorated competitor with international experience and is currently a Jiu-Jitsu instructor at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum.
Additionally, Gary is a two-time United States Ju-Jitsu Federation Hall of Fame inductee: International Elite Jiu-Jitsu Athlete (2022), and USA Ju-Jitsu Elite Athlete (2019).
Gary started his grappling journey in 1995 when he started wrestling. In high school, Gary was an Ohio State Qualifier and the Miami Valley Conference League’s Most Valuable Wrestler.
He is a decorated competitor with international experience. He has represented Team USA on several occasions in JJIF, WCJJO, and USJJF events claiming multiple Regional, National, International, and World Championships. Additionally,
In 2000, Gary was introduced to combat grappling through Shootfighting. In 2001, Gary Joined the Marine Corps and in 2002, Gary would begin training in Submission Wrestling while stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA.
In 2006, Gary moved to Long Island, NY, and continued his grappling-centric training in Japanese Ju-Jitsu and Judo under the tutelage of Sensei Dante Purita and Sensei Guy Semione. In 2009, Gary moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he would resume training in Ju-Jitsu under Sensei Todd Conley.
In 2015, focusing more on international newaza competitions, Gary would begin training in Ju-Jitsu and Judo under Professor Brian Walsh.
In 2016, Gary started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professors Robin Gieseler and BJ Nelson, and in 2019, Gary started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Lt Gen Michael Ferriter.
Sensei Hensley has notable wins in BJJ, including Submission of the Year recognition from Fight 2 Win.
In 2019, Gary was inducted into the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation’s Hall of Fame for recognition as USA Ju-Jitsu Elite Athlete.
In 2020, Gary was introduced to Grande Mestre José Higino Alves Nunes who would become an influential mentor on technical and academic aspects of the gentle art.
