Geanny Hernandez Quiala, started his Martial Arts training in Tae Kwon Do and Karate when he was around five years old, and by the age of six, he stepped on a Ju-Jitsu mat, in Camaguey, Cuba under the instructions of the Elio Montesino Medina (Rokudan in Ju-Jitsu).
In the year 2000, at twenty-one years old, Geanny earned the Shodan in Ju-Jitsu in Havana, Cuba. The Shodan rank was approved by the Cuban Association of Ju-Jitsu (ACJJ) and validated by the Spaniard, Pedro Rodriguez Dabuaza (Rokudan in Ju-Jitsu). After a few months of his Shodan examination, he was involved together with Sensei Medina (Rokudan in Ju-Jitsu) in the project to expand the Ju-Jitsu to the Central and West region of Cuba.
In June 2003, the Cuban Association of Ju-Jitsu celebrated the First National Championship in Guantanamo, Cuba. In this event, he won the gold medal in duo-system male category with his teammate Amado Vega. In this same year, he attended a Ju-Jitsu seminar in which consisted of rules and referee, fighting and duo-system. The seminar instructor was the Italian Sensei, Giancarlo Bagnulo (Godan in Ju-Jitsu).
In December 2003, Havana, Cuba, he participated in the First International Championship of Martial Arts, in which, he won the gold medal in duo-system male category with his teammate Amado Vega.
In December 2004, in Havana, Cuba, he participated in the Second International Championship of Martial Arts, in which, he won the gold medal in duo-system male category with his teammate Karel Mena. At this event, the National Martial Arts Committee of ranks approved his Nidan rank based on his hard work and dedication over the years and competitive results.
In March 2005, Theo Ronken (Nidan in Ju-Jitsu), the President of the First Bolivian Association of Ju-Jitsu, (Sensei Ronken - originally from the Nederlands and living in Bolivia) visited Ciego de Avila, Cuba to give a seminar in Ju-Jitsu fighting, duo-system, rules and referee. In this seminar, Geanny was selected by Dexter Reyes (Rokudan in Ju-Jitsu), Elio Montesino Medina (Rokudan in Ju-Jitsu) and Theo Ronken (Nidan in Ju-Jitsu) to participate in the Continental Referee Course. This course was planned to take place in Montevideo, Uruguay. Unfortunately, the Cuban authorities denied the travel.
In September 2005, Geanny immigrated to the United States and went to live in Miami, FL.
In December 2005, Theo Ronken and Michael Piaser gave Geanny guidance on how to become a member of the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) and they directed him to contact Bruce Bethers (Kudan in Ju-Jitsu), President and CEO of the USJJF.
In November 2007, he joined the United States Air Force (USAF) under the Delay Entry Program (DEP).
In January 2008, at a USJJF Ju-Jitsu and Judo seminar in Melbourne, FL, he met with Bruce Bethers, President and CEO of the USJJF. In this event, Geanny was examined to the Sandan rank in Ju-Jitsu and Judo. Geanny's Sandan promotions were approved and validated by Bruce Bethers and the USJJF National Technical & Promotion Committee. Furthermore, at this event, Geanny became a member of the prestigious USJJF and USMAF.
In June 2008, Geanny joined the United States Air Force (USAF) as an active duty. Due to his military duties, he was not able to participate in any competition until May 2010.
In May 2010, he participated in the NE Championship and State Championship in Lockport, NY, in which, Geanny won the gold medal in the -69 kg Ju-Jitsu fighting category.
In June 2010, he participated in the U.S.Open International Championship, MW Championship of Ju-Jitsu, in which, Geanny won the gold medal in the -69 kg Ju-Jitsu fighting category.
In 2010, Geanny was selected to be part of the USA Ju-Jitsu National Team to compete in the Ju-Jitsu Pan American Championship Mexico City, Mexico and in the Ju-Jitsu World Championship St Petersburg, Russia.
In July 2010, Geanny participated as a member of the USA Ju-Jitsu National Team in the Ju-Jitsu Pan American Championship in Mexico City, Mexico. He won the gold medal in the mixed duo-system (female and male) category with his teammate Sarah Stantone.
In addition, at this international event, Geanny won the bronze medal in the -69 kg Ju-Jitsu fighting category.
In January 2012, Geanny was promoted to the Yondan rank. Geanny’s Yondan rank was approved and validated by Bruce Bethers and the USJJF & USA-TKJ National Technical & Promotion Committee.
At the present time, Geanny is still active in the Martial Arts activities, but unfortunately and with a great sadness, he has retired from the competitions.
