Sensei George Newton Started Judo in June of 1951 (6 years old) at Offutt AFB, Nebraska in classes taught by Mel Bruno for 4 years.
(Note: Mel Bruno received his first degree Black Belt from Jigoro Kano in 1935. In 1954, he was recommended by Dr. Jigoro Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo to receive his 5th degree black belt. and he was the first non-Oriental in United States to receive that rank. When he retired as a 6th degree back belt nine years later, he was one of only three non-Japanese people in the world to hold this rank at the time.)
Classes at Offutt AFB, Nebraska were taught by visiting Kodokan Black Belts who were assigned to teach Combat Flying Crews in SAC under the direct supervision of Mr. Bruno. This program was established for the USAF by General Curtis LeMay who was commander of the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
He rapidly advanced through the Ranks to Ikkyu. Won numerous Junior & Senior Judo Tournaments in the Mid West. Featured by “Sports Illustrated” as a future judo champion and recognized as a very talented Judo Player. Was a member of the USAF Judo Exhibition Team and traveled with them.
Kodokan Judo Examiners came from Tokyo to our base--I was one of the very youngest Americans to receive Shodan at age of 15. Had to fight a row of 10 Black Belts and demonstrate skill in Kata Proficiency. Was promoted by the Kodokan in February 1959.
During this timeframe won many Judo Tournaments throughout the Mid West and had matches with many senior Black Belts. In Kansas City AAU fought and won against Phil Porter, Sandan , the leader of USJA Judo.
He continued in AAU and local competitions until entering College at the Virginia Military Institute. Formed and coached the VMI College Judo Club that became the Best Collegiate Club on the East Coast. Won Virginia State AAU Championship (two times), Marine Corps LT Heavyweight Championship and Eastern AAU Championship. Coached the VMI team to winning the Eastern Collegiate Championships, numerous AAU Championships and two 3rd place finishes in the NCAA Judo Championships. His tournament record at VMI was 75 wins and 4 loses. Recognized by Jim Bregman and Mamoru Noguchi from Shufu Judo Yudansha as the number # 1 Judo Club in the College Ranks.
Sensei Newton trained at the London School of Judo under Paul Newman, 9th Dan with over 100 Black Belts.
After graduation from VMI in 1966, he entered the USAF and continued to compete: Won the Light Heavy Weight Olympic Competition in St Louis, Won the Light Heavy Weight Championship at the Interservice Judo Championships at Quantico, Made the Interservice Judo Team, Won the Light Heavy Weight Championship and selected for the US Military National Judo Team for the USA AAU Championships. He won the 1976 Far East Inter-Service Judo Light Heavy Weight and Overall Grand Championship.

I had over 160 students and was the largest USJF registered Club. In September 1976 the Educational Television Network of Guam selected our Team to make thirty 20 minute programs to depict our teaching techniques for student development and learning.
During this timeframe he was in the USAF and flying B-52s. He went to Vietnam and had a very challenging career. Served two tours at SAC Headquarters and two tours at the Pentagon. Later as a Colonel, he held numerous command jobs and diplomatic posts to include US Defense Attaché in Madrid, Spain.
In 2010, Sensei Newton accepted International Ambassadorship from USJJF & USA-TKJ to help with International Training and develop of their oversees efforts. Currently serves as a USJJF & USA-TKJ Board Member.
