Dr. Her Yue Wong has been practicing the Chinese martial arts for over 70 years, and is the Founder of the Ching Yi Kung Fu Association (CYKFA). He derived the Ching Yi Kung Fu System from the traditional arts of Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, Tai Ji Quan and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, and taught hundreds of students around the world since founding the CYKFA in 1972, several of whom have gone on to become noted martial arts instructors in their own right.
With so many qualified CYKFA certified Black Belt Instructors to carry the Ching Yi Kung Fu System forward, Dr. Wong officially retired from Kung Fu teaching in October 2020 at the age of 85.
Dr. Wong served as CYKFA Director from 1972 – 31 December 2016. He retired from the Directorship on 1 January 2017, citing that date as the beginning of the Second Generation of the Ching Yi Kung Fu Association. He designated former CYKFA President Michael Alan Brown as his successor, and now acts as Advisor to the Association.
On 1 January 2001, the actual beginning of the new millennium by the Western calendar, Dr. Wong also formally announced the formation of the Dao Li Jiao – the “Way of Reason School” of Daoism.
The Dao Li Jiao focuses on the study of the Universe and its relationship to human life. Practitioners of the Dao Li Jiao research the relationship between Heaven, Earth and Man through study and contemplation, applying logic and reason rather than accepting any concept simply on faith. The Dao Li Jiao integrates classical Daoism, Rationalist thought, and the principles of modern science.
In late December 2001 – early January 2002, at the first official meeting of the Dao Li Jiao in China, Dr. Wong was unanimously elected to the position of Zong Shi (Interpreter).
Beginning as a young child, Dr. Wong learned martial arts from numerous well known Chinese masters of Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, Tai Ji Quan and Shaolin Kung Fu whose lineage traces back master to student to the beginnings of the arts.
For over 10 years, Dr. Wong was the direct student of Mr. Xu Feng Nan of Shandong Province, China. During that time, he also received specialized training from Mr. Xu’s brother Mr. Xu Zi Chang, Mr. Jin Ping Pu, and from his own grandfather and great uncle.
While living in Taiwan, Dr. Wong also had the opportunity to receive instruction in the arts and exchange information with several good friends including legendary masters Jiang Yin Shui, Liu Mu Sen, Zhang Jun Feng, Hong Yi Xiang, Hong Yi Wen and Hong Yi Mian.
Dr. Wong published a Tai Ji Quan instructional manual in 1973, and has produced videos on his method of Xian Tian Ba Gua Zhang, Yang Style Tai Ji Quan, Wong Style Tai Ji Quan, and Xing Yi Quan.
In 1996, he published the book “The Universe and Life” in Chinese, a philosophical and scientific study of the origins and cosmology of the Universe, and its effects on human life.
By profession, Dr. Wong is a geologist, with a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in geology from the University of Oklahoma. He made his home in Houston, Texas, but spent a great deal of time away during his career conducting geological exploration across the United States and Asia.
In January 2000, he retired from geology and returned home to Houston. He and his wife have four children – all certified CYKFA Black Belts in addition to their careers in medicine, law and finance.
In 2011 Dr. Wong published his first book “Inside the Way of Reason” a landmark text that presents decades of knowledge and insights into the workings of the Universe and its effects on human existence, accumulated through meditation, observation, introspection, scientific research, practice of the Chinese martial arts and Qigong, and the study of Chinese Daoist and Confucian classics.
In 2018 Dr. Wong published his latest book “Exploring the Way of Reason” which further elucidates and describes practical applications for the concepts presented in Inside the Way of Reason.
In October 2021, the senior level cadre of the CYKFA voted to bestow the rank of 10th Degree and the official title of Grandmaster to Dr. Wong as is fitting of the originator and founder of a martial arts organization. It was awarded to him at the 2021 Gathering of the CYKFA and DLJ organizations in Houston, Texas.
On January 01, 2022, it was announced that the positions of Dao Li Jiao Interpreter held by Dr. Wong and the Assistant Interpreter were to have lifelong tenure and would no longer be filled by others in the future. Dr. Wong also announced his retirement from active involvement with the Ching Yi Kung Fu Association and the Dao Li Jiao in order to devote more time to writing his two upcoming books and devoting himself to his wife and family.
