Sensei Humberto Becerra - started his studies of Judo and Ju-Jitsu in 1954 in Havana, Cuba in the dojo of Maestro A. Kolychkine (organizer of Judo in Cuba and founder of the Panamerican Judo Union).
Later in 1960 he went to train under the direction of Master Moc Kan Sent until he left for Mexico in 1968. From this date he start my classes with Master Fernando Yi until 1970.
During this whole period, Sensei Becerra participated in numerous local, provincial and national competitions in Cuba and then abroad as a member of the national youth team. At this stage his sporting achievements were high which allowed him to remain in the national teams of Cuba in several international events until he decided to request political asylum in Canada. When Sensei Becerra left Cuba he had earned the 2nd Dan (Nidan) in 1970.
In 1970, Sensei Becerra enter the United States in the City of Miami, Florida where he began his Sensei journey, teaching Judo in special programs of public schools. In 1972, he joined the military serving in the Military Police until 1975. After the end of his military service, Sensei Becerra opened his school in Miami and alternated classes in Miami Dade Collage (South Campus). In 1995, he moved to Texas and by this time, he had already obtained Godan in Judo.
In 1995 in Texas, he opened his school - "Becerra Judo & Ju-Jitsu Club" which continues to the present to open its doors for the public. With participation in national and international events, his school has been the most "Awarded Club Team" over the past 22 years. Sensei Becerra also had the opportunity to teach Ju-Jitsu for 17 years at Richland College until the program changed to general physical education.
During the period from 1983 to 1995, Sensei Becerra visited Japan several times participating in seminars, conferences and training events on Katas, Atemi and Gokyu Techniques.
Sensei Becerra has had the opportunity to create and organize events that are currently of great importance such as International Junior and Senior Camp from 1997 to present time. The Becerra Judo Challenges, 2015 to the present, National Scholastic, National Junior Olympic, Senior Nationals and Presidents Cup.
Sensei Becerra is a certified National Level and Panamerican Level Referee (not active) and certified International Gold Coach. He has had the honor of leading several United States Teams in Panamerican events as well as state and national events.
Currently, the Becerra Judo & Ju-Jitsu Club is dedicating a focused effort to recover and maintain the values of traditional Judo and Ju-Jitsu. It is for this reason that his school has maintained a self-defense program where Judo is emphasized as it was conceived - as a martial art.
Due to Sensei Becerra's efforts and personal development in Judo as well as in several other disciples, he has been promoted from Godan (Judo) in 1995 through Hachidan (Judo) in 2012. These Dan grades were not only issued by USA Judo, but also by the Judo Federation of Cuba.
In 2016, Sensei Becerra conducted a traditional Judo seminar including Judo Kata and Ju-Jitsu with Master Dionisio de laTorre, Jr. Another seminar is scheduled by the President of the Panamerican Jiu-Jitsu Federation, Master Dionisio de la torre,Jr which is scheduled for February 22, 2020, Traditional Judo and Ju-Jitsu, as well as Kano Ryu Nihon Jujutsu.
Sensei Humberto Becerra is a Life Member of the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) ® and USA Traditional Kodokan Judo (USA-TKJ) ®.
