James Shortt began his training in Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu, in 1959 with his father Peter Shortt Sensei. Peter Shortt had been student of the Japanese Ryoi Shinto-ryu teacher Takeda Tatsuo Sensei.

Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu
James Shortt has been practicing Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jūjutsu for 62 years and had it not been for him, then this traditional method would have disappeared. He is internationally acknowledged for his skill and understanding of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu
He received his Menkyo Kaiden (full licence) in Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu from the Japanese teacher Ryoi Shinto-ryu Komito Kaizo Sensei.
He is a previous Chairman of the British Isles Jūjutsu Federation and later a founding member of the U.K. Government backed ‘Martial Arts Commission’
In 1985, he had the honour of demonstrating Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu for His Imperial Highness (the then Crown Prince), now the Japanese Emperor Naruhito at the Anjinkai Festival in London.
In 1998, he was awarded Kudan (9th Dan black belt) in Jujutsu from the Dai Nihon Seibukan Renmei.
In 2009, at the invitation of his Japanese student Osanai Hideto (8th Dan, Menkyo Kaiden ), he taught a Taikai (international seminar) at the Sanbu City Budōkan in Chiba-ken Japan. During that event, he was presented with a certificate celebrating his 50 years of Ryoi Shinto-ryu practice.
From 1976 to 2019, he served as Kaicho (Chairman) of the Ryoi Shintokai (organisation for the practice and preservation of Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu) and Shihanke (Chief Instructor) between 1976 and 2020. He was subsequently awarded the rank of Shuhan (Senior Master) and the title of Meijin (Master Exemplar) by the Ryoi Shintokai.
The ‘Zen Nihon Sogo Budo Renmei’ (ZNSBR - All Japan Budo Federation) in Kyoto, Japan have awarded him:

In 2019, he received a ‘Kansha-jo’ - certificate of appreciation in celebration of his 60 years in Ryoi Shinto-ryu Jujutsu presented to him by the Ryoi Shintokai organisation.
