John Farrar began his Martial Arts journey over 50 years ago in 1972 in New Haven CT. training in Judo and Jujitsu under his Father and Uncle Edward and Waymon Taylor.
John Farrar currently holds Black Belts in -
Traditional Jujitsu - 5th Degree,
Traditional Kodokan Judo - 4th Degree,
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - 3rd Degree,
Sasori Neko Ryu Goshin-Jitsu - 2nd Degree,
He is a Certified Coach for USA Wrestling and a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, Inc.
John started Martial Arts in the Family dojo at the local YMCA in CT. As a youth, John competed in Judo extensively, earned multiple State, National and Jr. Olympic Championships and continues to test himself in Judo as well as Brazilian Jujitsu and No Gi Grappling tournaments to this day. John received his Shodan in Judo and Jujitsu on his 18th birthday in 1982 and has continued his study and instruction through his current Academies BEDROC Martial Arts.
In 1982, immediately after High School, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was off to Parris Island, SC. for Basic Training. In 1984, upon being Meritoriously promoted to Sergeant, he began teaching Judo and Close Quarter Combat to the Marines and Corpsman at MCB Camp Pendleton. During his tour of Active Duty John spent in excess of 4.5 years of his enlistments deployed or stationed overseas. He did, however, make it a point to visit and train at local schools, always encouraging his troops to come with and / or cross train. He served time in billets as an Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare Chief, a Rifle & Pistol Team member, Saluting Battery member, Primary Marksmanship Instructor, Close Quarters Combat Instructor, Prisoner Escort NCOIC, and time as the Legal Chief for the III MEF / 3rd MarDiv Staff Judge Advocates Office.
John’s left active duty in 1990, joined a local USMC Reserve unit and was hired onto the Virginia Beach Police Department. John was employed with the VBPD beginning January 1991 and during his time served on / performed duties as a Patrol Officer, Honor Guard Commander, Field Training Officer, Federal DUI Task Force member, Special Operations / Narcotics and Community Action.
John Currently owns and operates BEDROC Martial Arts and FIT Response with his son in Rochester, NY where they train civilians, military and LEO in Judo, Jujitsu, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Self Defense, Tactical Knife, Fitness, Basic and Tactical Firearms. John opened the BEDROC Academies in upstate New York just over 20 years ago and during that time has produced many Jr. and Sr. National and International Champions in Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu and No Gi Grappling. John has also coached multiple MMA and Kickboxing Championship Belt holders.
John, continuing his passion for learning as well as teaching, firearms, self defense and law enforcement training, opened the ”FIT Response” branch of BEDROC to fulfill a “need” and began also offering Private Instruction and Group Classes in:
