Sensei Jose Merino started martial arts in 1965. Since then, have learned and practiced numerous martial arts. Boxed for 10 years (180 bouts). Was certified as an amateur boxing coach, trainer, timekeeper and referee in 1984. Coached the Homestead AFB, FL Boxing Team and the City of Homestead, FL youth boxing team (1976-1979). Coached the boxing team at Williams AFB in Arizona (1980-1981) and PAL Boxing in Melbourne FL (1993-1995).
Completed a training course and became a certified instructor by The American Taekwondo Association. And with the Songahm Taekwondo Federation, and The World Traditional Taekwondo Union in 2001. Became an international judge. As a 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo managed two Taekwondo schools in Florida and trained students from beginner level through advanced ranks. Coached national and international competitors.
In 2006, began training Japanese Jujitsu under Sensei Newton (7th Dan) and continued to do so for the past 16 years. Have been training and teaching with Sensei Newton and while training with him at Harbor City Dojo in Melbourne FL, he has promoted me to the levels of 5th Dan through the UNITED STATES JU-JITSU FEDERATION (USJJF) and 4th Dan through the UNITED STATES JUDO ASSOCIATION'S (USJA) JUJITSU DIVISION.
Now they call HAPKIDO FIGHTING ARTS, in Indialantic, FL our home dojo. Over the past 16 years, he have been teaching boxing and kickboxing at our dojo. Have also been ranked to Shodan in Judo through USJA. On a parallel path, in 2007 began training in Japanese sword, Toyama Ryu and Batto Do with Sensei Lois Fredricks. Awarded Shodan by her in 2012. Continued teaching the sword art after Sensei Fredricks passed away in 2013. plan to continue training, learning and sharing my diverse martial arts knowledge with fellow students and instructors as often as possible for many years to come. Martial Arts is Jose's life!!

He is now also a 7th Dan with USJA-Jujitsu and a 6th Dan with USJJF and a Master Level Rank Examiner for both organizations.
