Sensei Leandro Lorenco was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and moved to Guarulhos, where he was raised by his parents, Marcia and Camilo. As a child, Leandro was a shy kid and was encouraged by his parents to participate in sports such as swimming, soccer, volleyball, and handball.
In 2001, he found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through a friend, and he thought it could be an excellent chance to learn self-defense. At 14 years old, Leandro began this martial arts journey, and five years later, at 19 years of age, he began teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the biggest gym in his town (back then called Runner Guarulhos). At 21 years old, Leandro graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education (FMU, Brazil). At 24 years old, he achieved two major milestones in his life, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt (under Danny and Robert Abu) and a master's degree in human movement sciences (Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil).
In 2012, Leandro and his wife Thaisa decided to move to the United States in search of a new chapter in their lives. From Brazil directly to Las Vegas, Leandro started training at Wand Fight Team, the 2010 best MMA Gym of the World (World MMA Awards) and home of the legendary MMA fighter Wanderlei Silva. After a short month and a half, Leandro was hired to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to all Wand Fight Team students and fighters.
In 2013, after working with professional fighters for about a year, Leandro felt the need to improve his takedown skills and joined Ryoku Judo Club under the tutelage of Sergio Sanchez. Since then, he has competed in several Judo tournaments, including seven Judo Winter Nationals, to become a 3x Judo National Champion (2014, 2017 & 2019).
Later in 2013, Leandro was hired as Wand Fight Team's general manager, which presented a new opportunity for growth. In 2015, when Wanderlei Silva decided to move back to Brazil, Leandro and his wife became the new owners of Wand Fight Team Las Vegas.
Leandro was inducted to the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Black Belt of the Year in 2015 and as a Distinguished Instructor in 2020.
In 2019 he released his first book titled "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructorship: the student-to-teacher transition," where he approaches the educational aspects of grassroots instructorship. As an author, he has published two meta-analyses, two original research, two abstracts (ASCM), and co-authored two original studies (available on PubMed).
Aiming to potentialize business growth, Leandro pursued a master's degree in business administration, graduating in 2021.
He currently holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (IBJJF & FPJJ), a 2nd dan black belt in Judo (USA Judo & USJA), and a 3rd dan black belt in Ju-Jitsu (USJJF & USJA). Together, Leandro and his wife, operate Milestone Martial Arts/Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As an avid reader, Leandro realized that his favorite books were all written by psychologists, prompting him to enroll in a Ph.D. program in Psychology. He is currently a candidate expected to graduate in 2024.
