Michael Alan Brown has been practicing and teaching the martial arts for over 55 years and holds the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt (Ba Duan) in the Ching Yi Kung Fu System.
He was the First Student of Ching Yi Kung Fu Association Founder Dr. Her Yue Wong. After being awarded CYKFA Black Belt #1 in 1973, he taught Kung Fu classes in Oklahoma City area until he opened his first Ching Yi Academy of Kung Fu in Stillwater, OK in 1975. He later relocated to San Diego, CA where he gathered a strong group of dedicated students by teaching outdoors in a park and then established his second Ching Yi Academy in East San Diego in 1977. He later moved his Academy to Maryland where he taught prior to working as an analyst for the DOD for 12 years in Korea.
In addition to running his own schools, Director Brown was also the Xing Yi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang instructor at the prestigious Aspen Academy of Martial Arts in the 1970s. He has been featured in Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, and Karate Illustrated magazines, and the books Secret Worlds of Self Defense; Who’s Who In American Martial Arts; and Masters, Founders and Leaders of American Martial Arts.
Michael Brown has served as CYKFA President from 1973 to 1993, then again from November 1999 – 31 December 2016. When Dr. Wong retired from the Director position for the CYKFA on 1 January 2017 he named Michael Brown as his successor.
Prior to learning the Ching Yi System, Brown served in the military in Vietnam, then as an undercover narcotics and weapons investigator with the Oklahoma City Police Department. Beginning in 1964, he trained in several other martial arts styles, as well as military and police tactics.
Among his previous teachers were Lou Angel of Japanese Goju-Ryu; John Robertson at Chuck Norris’ Chula Vista, CA Tang Soo Do dojang; Robert K. Ahia of Chito-Ryu; Eddie Delacruz and Remy Presas of the Filipino Martial Arts Kali/Escrima and Modern Arnis; and Okinawan Shorei-Kan Goju-Ryu master Akira Kawakami. He also learned the basics of Shotokan Karate from Shodan Sam Bigknife; Judo from Nidan Robert Lawhon; Taekwondo from members of the Republic of Korea White Horse Division in Vietnam; police defensive and control tactics from Judo Nidan Richard Boyd; freestyle wrestling and self defense from his grandfather Emerson Elliott “Red” Woolman; and Western boxing from Oklahoma welterweight John Brewer.
In 1984, Brown also became friends with noted Chinese stylist Dr. Kenneth John Fish, a direct disciple of legendary master Zhang Junfeng (Chang Chun-feng) and several other renowned Chinese masters, and learned his Yi Zong (易 宗) School method of Xing Yi Quan.
In addition to being awarded CYKFA Black Belt certificate #1, Brown was certified as an Instructor of the Shihan-Ryu Chinese Arts by the American Martial Arts Society in 1973, then as an International Master by the International Martial Arts Association in January 1984.
A Dao Li Shi (Scholar of the Way of Reason) in the Dao Li Jiao school of Daoism founded by Dr. Wong at the beginning of the new millennium, Michael Brown was elected to the position of Zhu Li Zong Shi (Assistant Interpreter) at the first meeting of the Dao Li Jiao in China in 2002. In October 2021, that position was awarded to him for life and as of January 01, 2022 with that position never to be filled by another. Mr. Brown was also named as an advisor to the Dao Li Jiao School of Taoism.
Director Brown currently lives in Maryland with his wife Sunja where he devotes his time to family and continued practice of the Chinese internal martial arts.
