Coach Mike was introduced to Martial Arts in 2001 at the beginning of his Law Enforcement career through a defensive tactics program that was based on the art of Hapkido. In 2005 he joined the school ran by the Defensive Tactics instructor taking every class they offered which included Hapkido, Jujitsu, Kung Fu and LAMECO.
Later in 2005 he was introduced to Olympian and Olympic Judo Coach, Sensei Pat Burris. Coach Mike joined Sensei Pat’s dojo, USA Stars, after that first meeting. At USA Stars he studied a variety of arts to include Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Jujutsu and FMA.. He is a National Judo Coach certified with USA Judo and a student under Sensei Pat Burris. After a short but successful run as a National Judo competitor Coach Mike’s competition career came to an end due to injuries. He ended his time as a competitor nationally ranked under USA Judo in the +100 division.
After healing from the injury Coach Mike concentrated on learning how to teach martial arts studying under Sensei Pat Burris. Coach Mike is very proud to have earned his Judo Black Belt and National Coaching Credentials from Sensei Pat Burris. While at USA Stars he also earned his brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu (grappling program not affiliated with any BJJ association). While studying under Sensei Pat, Coach Mike has earned his Nidan in Judo (10/08/2020) and Ikkyu in Jujutsu (2007).
In 2008 Coach Mike attended the police academy. His new employment moved him to a remote area in Oklahoma. At that time there was not any grappling schools in the area. When he could, he traveled to USA Stars to train. He also consistently traveled and trained at various schools and style as a guest. Coach Mike started a small training group with other law enforcement and used long distance training material to continue his studies and training. During that time Coach Mike was awarded the rank of Nidan in Kenpo Jujitsu from GM E. McPeek through his long distance training program.
In 2013 Coach Mike moved back to the OKC area which allowed him to study consistently at USA Stars again. In June of 2016 Coach Mike was working evenings which prevented him from training as frequently as he wanted. While working one on one with Sensei Ricky Taylor twice a week during the day at USA Stars he decided to join the Carlson Gracie Academy Oklahoma so that he can have additional time on the mats. In just three months he earned his Blue Belt from Carlson Gracie Academy Oklahoma which was awarded by Carlson Gracie Jr on September 3rd, 2016. At the end of the year he left that academy. He started a small training group in the small building which would eventually become his dojo.
In 2017 Coach Mike met USJJF Sensei Randall Schubert. Since that meeting Coach Mike has trained Jujitsu and Taiho Jutsu under Sensei Randall Schubert as his schedule allowed. Sensei Schubert awarded Coach Mike his Jujitsu Shodan in 2017 thru the USJJF. At that time Coach Mike’s Shodan in Judo was certified with the USA TKJ. In December of 2019 Coach Mike was honored to be promoted to Nidan in Jujitsu and Shodan in Taiho Jutsu by Sensei Randall Schubert and Sensei William S. Sharp. Sensei Schubert currently teaches Jujitsu at Coach Mike’s dojo once a week (2021).
In 2017 Coach Mike earned his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu through the USA Jiu-Jitsu program. At the end of 2019 he was awarded his first-degree black belt from USA Jiu-Jitsu. His Jiu-Jitsu black belt and Dojo is registered and certified with the USJJF. Coach Mike proudly serves on the grappling committee for USA Jiu-Jitsu.

At the beginning of 2018 Coach Mike opened Gorilla Judo and BJJ in the low-income community where he serves as a Police Officer so that he can reach the kids in the community. The program has been highly successful with kids medaling in all tournaments they have entered to include several kids medaling in the 2019 ATJA Judo National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
Shortly after opening the program Coach Mike met Master Ricardo Cavalcanti at an AGF tournament. They hit it off like old friends. That day Coach Mike became a student of Master Ricardo. Master Ricardo is a direct student and black belt of GM Carlson Gracie Sr. Coach Mike started training directly with Master Ricardo as a blue belt to learn his style of Jiu-Jitsu. Gorilla Judo and BJJ Club is an official affiliate of Master Ricardo Cavalcanti. As a RCBJJ blue belt Coach Mike earned his RCBJJ instructor credentials directly from Master Ricardo. On September 18th , 2021 he was awarded his RCBJJ Black Belt by Master Ricardo Cavalcanti.
Coach Mike is a certified Copper Level Wrestling Coach under USA Wrestling. He teaches a no gi program based off of Judo, BJJ and Catch Wrestling.
On January 22nd, 2022 Coach Mike was awarded his first degree black belt in Submission Arts Wrestling (SAW) by Coach Mike Martelle. SAW is a no gi grappling system which incorporates elements of Judo, BJJ and Catch Wrestling.
For over twenty years Coach Mike has worked in job fields such as police officer, jailer, bouncer, bounty hunter, armed security, personal protection, etc which has allowed him to hone his skills in practical self-defense.
Gorilla Judo and BJJ Club has survived the public health concerns of 2020 and, in some aspects, has continued to grow. Coach Mike has helped start three BJJ or Judo programs in Oklahoma outside of his own in the last year. Currently he is concentrating on rebuilding his own dojo.
Through out the years Coach Mike has hosted seminars taught by USJJF instructors to include Master Bruce Bethers in 2022.
In 2013 Coach Mike became a certified Police Canine Handler. He worked as a canine handler in his high crime community until he was promoted to the rank of Patrol Sergeant.
In 2017 Coach Mike completed the Basic Instructor Development course taught by CLEET. Passing this course certified him as CLEET instructor. CLEET is the certifying agency for Law Enforcement in the state of Oklahoma. In 2017 Coach Mike completed a CLEET course certifying him as a Tactical Knife Instructor.
In 2022 Coach Mike submitted a 120 hour Taiho Jutsu course to CLEET. That course was approved by CLEET for Continuing Education credits for anyone holding a CLEET license which includes Police Officers, Security Guards, Private Investigators and Bail Enforcement. That course is a fundamental part of Coach Mike’s teaching curriculum.
In the Fall of 2022 and the Spring of 2023 Coach Mike served as a part time instructor at the local Votech. He taught High-school Students enrolled in the Pre-Law Enforcement program. The subjects he taught was Taiho Jutsu and the unarmed security certification course.
During the Fall of 2022 Coach Mike returned to the Valley Brook Police Department as a reserve Patrol Sergeant.
In 2022 Coach Mike retired from Law Enforcement which led to his dojo being relocated. At the end of 2022 Coach Mike decided to step back into full time police work returning to the Valley Brook Police Department as the day shift patrol Sergeant. This has allowed him to reopen his community outreach program where he allows local kids in his jurisdiction to train for free. Coach Mike moved to the community that he has served for most of the last ten years. He is active with the local Church and working with the Church to reach youth in the community.
