Nancy Barnett

Life Member - United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) ®
Life Member - USA Traditional Kodokan Judo (USA-TKJ) ®
Member - USJJF National Technical Committee
Member - USA-TKJ National Technical Committee

Nancy Barnett began practicing martial arts at the age of 43 in January of 1993 at Yoon’s Judo club under Dr. Luis Gorospe.  She rose through the required ranks from that time in both judo and jujitsu, and has earned a number of awards. Included are awards for Outstanding Female Student, 1995, Most Improved Mudansha 1996, Most Improved Technician in 1997, Oklahoma Judo Association Outstanding Female Kata Athlete in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

She attained the rank of Shodan in both judo and Jujitsu November 7, 1998, Nidan June 2007, Sandan August 2012, and Yodan in judo 2015. She competed in numerous tournaments in both Shiai and Kata, excelling in Katame No Kata and Goshin Jitsu No Kata as well as Nage No Kata.  She has served as Oklahoma Judo Association Treasurer for two years in early 2000.  She was the first female to receive Shodan under Sensei Gorospe, Thom Layon, Frank Yoon, and Rob Okada at Yoon’s Judo Club.   She attended a number of symposiums, seminars and clinics including state and regional coaching, Kata certification, and Referee clinics.

She was involved in a coaching clinic hosted by Yoon’s March 1999, and a technical clinic taught by Phil Porter who was, at that time, President of the United States Judo Association.  She also attended a national coach’s clinic in May of 1999 and a training seminar offered by the Inosano Academy and taught by Dan Inosanto.  She was also was certified in Katame No Kata, Goshin Jitsu No Kata and Naga No Kata.

In 2004, Dr. Gorospe founded Southside Judo and Jujitsu.  Four years later Nancy began a class for children, which is still going strong today.  In 2006 she traveled to Japan to attend an advanced clinic at the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo.  Nancy is the second highest ranking teacher under Dr. Gorospe and is responsible for all classes for children and fills in with adult classes when Dr. Gorospe is unavailable.

Recently she was called on to substitute for Dr. Gorospe, to teach one of his signature Gorospe Defensive techniques at the Greene Martial Arts Association Warriors Weekend seminar in Foyil Ok.  The seminar was offered by the Roger Greene Martial Arts Association, which was attended by martial artists of various disciplines, from across the United States.
