Sensei Ricky Herndon started his interest in Judo 1969 briefly while pursuing other sports at the same time. After a long departure from the arts, he started his training again in Jujitsu in 1994 while stationed at the Pacific Missile Range on the Island of Kauai as part of a small security force. He later retired from the military in 1997, and once again had a departure from the arts while dealing with major health issues after being diagnosed with cancer.
He started his training in the arts again in 2015 with 8th Degree Black Belt /Judo, 6th Degree Black Belt / Jujitsu, Sensei Ronald Allen Charles. He has also had the opportunity to train with 9th Degree Black Belt / Jujitsu, 6th Degree Black Belt / Judo, Sensei Ben Bergwerf. He currently trains weekly with 4th Degree Black Belt / Jujitsu, Sensei John Merwin.
He currently holds the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt / Judo, 1st Degree Black Belt / Jujitsu. He was an assistant instructor with Sensei Ronald Charles at the Naval Weapons Station where he taught Active Duty Military, Adult Dependents, and Department of Defense personnel free of charge. He has taken over as head Sensei at the Naval Weapons Station teaching Judo and as an assistant for Jujitsu.
He opened his own dojo in 2019 because of his love for the arts, so he could teach children. He currently operates a very successful dojo teaching adults and children in the arts of Judo and Jujitsu.
